New name, same purpose

Your eyes aren’t playing tricks and you didn’t pick up the wrong newspaper. The Park City Independent has a new name. Starting with our June issue, we are the Fairfield County Independent.

We’ve changed our name because we just opened a bureau in Norwalk staffed by two veteran journalists who will report on events there and in Stamford for the Spanish-speaking communities in those cities.

To us, it didn’t make sense to continue calling ourselves the Park City Independent when we’re expanding our coverage beyond the Park City’s borders. We remain as committed to Bridgeport as we ever were. Our publisher, editors and most of our contributors live there. But we realize that in this economic climate, this newspaper needs to grow in order to survive. The Spanish-speaking communities of Stamford and Norwalk offer us the opportunity to reach hundreds of potential new advertisers and thousands of additional readers — and consumers.

Carlos Mavila and Ana Cecilia Zapata, the editors of our new Spanish-language section for Norwalk and Stamford, are also educators and poets.

We work hard to make every issue of the newspaper better than the one that preceeded it. Fortunately, we have a group of first-rate writers and photographers working with us. Without them, this paper would not have earned the support and confidence of our readers. It’s gratifying when ordinary folks tell us they like our paper and appreciate what we’re doing.

Our purpose in starting the Independent was to bring readers the stories that the out-of-state-owned news media didn’t want to cover. We’ve done that. The fact that we’re a community newspaper and locally owned has been a major factor in our success. Our best stories almost always sprout from something our publisher or one of our editors saw on the street, or learned at a church social, or got a tip about from a neighbor.

While our name has changed, our purpose hasn’t. We will continue to serve our community — now much larger than when we published our first issue — with the same integrity, honesty and reliability as always.
